We were told to design a structure that celebrated the city of Dundee and explored the concept of sound whilst still adhering to the manifesto.
I decided to explore the idea of visualising sound through cymatics. Cymatics is the study of visible sound and vibration. When sound vibration is applied to a surface such as a liquid and powdered substance it creates these beautiful geometric patterns.
I then chose to explore the concept of spirituality and sound, and began to focus on the idea of contemplation. I decided to design a space for contemplation and meditation – exploring sound, the visualisation of sound and use of materials, I particularly took influence from zen gardens and other areas used for meditation.
We got the chance to choose our own site and I chose an area of land under the Tay Road Bridge.
What I have ended up designing is a large scale structure, with four different sections to contemplate different things.
